Hello, my name's Akio. As a chemical engineer turned software developer and data science nerd, I believe in the power of scientific research over that of unproven, non-statistically significant testimonials. And with that out of the way, let me tell you briefly about my own journey: about a year before starting this website, I suffered a mysterious series of symptoms from fatigue, hairloss, to arthritis. Only 40 at the time and in reasonably good health before then, the condition was a complete mystery to me, or even that there was a condition and it wasn't simply the stress of a demanding job and day-to-day living! It turns out I had acquired an autoimmune disorder (one which is commonly triggered by stress) and it would take months of my symptoms progressively getting worse before I had any diagnosis.
When I finally became aware of my condition, I was able to mitigate it with what immunological experts usually agree is the first line of defense -- diet and lifestyle! Eating a healthy whole foods plant-based diet and managing stress combined with regular exercise and deliberate cold-exposure in a frozen lake in upstate New York was key to finally -- more than 9 months after the onset -- reversing the symptoms and bringing back my energy levels. Now back in London, arguably one of the least healthy most nutritionally challenged portions of the globe, I want to make it easier for myself and others to change their lives with diet. This website's goal is to offer advise in the form of delicious recipes one can cook at home that bring together the latest clinical research on human nutrition and well-being; recommendations of already tasty recipes that will be made healthier through the advance of machine learning and other advanced computational tools. Using scientific data fed into bespoke AI models, while restricting access to untrustworthy data from the web that popular models like gpt or copilot have been trained on, is key. When we talk of misleading data it can be anything from diet fads, clueless social media posts, the unsupported opinions of others (or my own), or industry-led attempts to obscure facts in favor of whatever sugary, ultra-processed product is being sold. Here, our goal is simple: offer recipes and cooking tips to help you improve your own health, and that which is tailored to your specific caloric and nutritional needs.
Adopting a plant-based (or vegan) lifestyle is not a pre-requisite; however, as arguably the healthiest among the diets and the trend most responsisble for Blue Zones around the world, it is the main focus of this website. As such, we at CuisineSavvy will strive to remain 100% free for vegans, newly-vegan or those experimenting with a plant-based diet. With healthy vegetarian and non-vegetarian menus available for premium subscribers, hopefully this won't offend any die-hard vegans :-) I myself was a vegetarian for most of my life and wish to improve diets of my omnivore friends to the extent that can be done.
It's still very early days in our companies journey, as is it in my own switch to a WFPB diet, but in trying to solve my autoimmune disorder, which I will not name specifically, I have inadvertantly solved a number of unrelated and preexisting conditions some of which I will name -- here's what I've improved in less than 6 mo of eating optimally: lowered my BMI from 29 to 24 (>25 is considered overweight), increased my aerobic fitness and VO2max , cured my athelete's foot and other skin conditions, virtually eliminated asthma -- a condition I've had since childhood including the need for inhalers (I attribute going gluten-free most with this one) -- increased focus, improved my sleep zapping my longstanding sleep-apnea and reducing snoring (so I'm told), dramatically stimulated hair re-growth following widespread balding, improved my mood and increased my productivity particularly of the pre-9am, post-lunch and post-5pm lulls where I no longer feel tired, fog-headed or drained, respectively.
These are just the initial symptoms that come to mind, with results achieved without prescription medication. Whilst, not every disorder can be sorted through diet (always follow your doctors advise and do get a second medical opinion when possible), it pays to be your own advocate and continually look for ways to supplement whatever medication you may need with good nutrition. Unlike most drugs, diet is often preventive in nature when it comes to leading causes of disease and mortality! And I have yet to read of a condition that is made worse by healthy eating or positive lifestyle choices such as not smoking, limiting alcohol intake or getting moderate exercise.
Many of the features for this website are still in the development stage, and as such yet to be released. So do make sure to check-in periodically even if you don't yet find the recipes or features that you're looking for this point in time. Thanks for coming along for the journey, I look forward to eating healthfully together, sharing recipes, tips and tricks for a better, creulty-free, environmentally-sustainable lifestyle.
